Fire clay has long been known north of Baden, a northern suburb of St. Louis. At the shale quarry of the St. Louis Portland Cement Company the massive shale which is mined is underlain by 2 to 3 feet of black shale and this by 1-1/2 feet of coal, beneath which is the fire clay, said to be 25 feet thick.
