Stibnite from South Africa

Antimony oxides are used in paint pigments, as colouring agents in glass, and as fire retardents. This gold-antimony ore contains an estimated 15 volume percent of the sulphide, much less than the hand- specimen appearance suggests, due to a tendency for the samples to break along stibnite-lined fracture surfaces.

ANTIMONY

Antimony is rare in the Earth's crust having a (upper) crustal abundance of only 0.4 ppm (Rudnick and Gao, 2003). Antimony is found in over 100 different mineral species, typically in association with elements such as mercury, silver and gold. The principal ore mineral of antimony is stibnite (Sb 2 S 3).
